Hello SRC Members,
It has been a while since we had our last group photo. Since some of the faces are new and our brochure supply is getting low, it is time for a new group shot! Wib Middleton w/ Thunder Mnt Design is a great photographer, has agreed to do this after the Referrals meeting on Wednesday (28th) of March. Please make a special attempt not to miss this meeting as it will be a while for the next opportunity. Also the brochure looks better the more members we have!!

Mr. Ken Hughes, founder of NAZTEQ Consulting was the featured presenter at Wednesday’s meeting. Ken stressed maintenance and backup for computers. He recommended maintenance on Macs regularly between 6-12 months to keep them clean; he recommended 3-6 months for PCs. He confessed to be a “Dell guy” when it comes to PCs–especially the OptiPlex as a business machine. He does not recommend the various free products for protecting computers. He noted that protection “suites” try to do everything, while anti-Malware products do certain specific things. The clearest communication, however, was to have plans for maintenance, backup, and protection, and that he had clear ways to make your computers efficient and safe. “So much of our lives revolve around technology, why not take proper care of those investments?”

Mr. Hughes offers a free consultation, has more than 28 years of professional experience helping people effectively maintain and improve their computer and telecommunications systems. His specialties include setup and repair, purchasing assistance, and maximizing computer efficiency in a timely manner for business and residential clients. Ken holds certifications from Apple and Northern Telecom and is proficient with both Macintosh and Windows. The Heartline Cafe’s representative of owner Phyllis Cline, John Howe, was the featured speaker at Wednesday’s meeting. John grew up in Sedona, was a member of the first graduating class of Red Rock High School, and went to the University of Arizona. He loves running food and serving at The Heartline Cafe, is passionate about his wife/soulmate and their 10-year old Golden Retriever, loves “outdoor stuff”–mountain biking, hiking and kayaking. There was no featured presenter at Wednesday’s meeting.

Ms Lisa Long of Yes I Can with a Plan was the featured speaker at Wednesday’s meeting, and spoke of her love of the outdoors: travel, hiking, biking, has done the Snake River in Idaho, has cruised to Alaska and watched totem poles being made, loves Hawaii, especially Maui. Her mom had always wanted to go to Hawaii, so she took her on an “all-expense paid” tourist trip to Maui, complete with the road to Hana and a luau. She travelled to Jamaica, did a balloon ride, and took out a fence on the descent, promised herself she would “never do that again, but I DID!” She did parasailing in Mazatlan, and warned everyone to make sure you do it out at sea, not near the beach where you can crash into buildings if the wind shifts suddenly. She did jet-skiing in the ocean–”fun, but the waves really beat you up.” She has been on a rafting trip, and is part of the Big Sister program. Ms. Lisa Long of Yes I Can with a Plan, was the featured presenter at Wednesday’s meeting. Lisa stressed that her company is focused on business solutions coaching, not life coaching, although certain segments sound like life coaching, because clients don’t always value themselves. ”I help you get more and better qualified clients, help you accomplish more in less time, have more fun and be more efficient. I help reduce and manage distractions, help you stay more focused on your targets and goals.” Lisa spoke of creating leverage–help you serve more people–”start one to one, then one to many.” Lisa works over the phone–all over world with Skype–she spoke of a client in Scotland. All about results–”what would it look like when we’re done?” Yes I Can with a Plan has different levels of support–from “done for you,” the most expensive, (“which I personally don’t recommend, because you don’t learn how to do it yourself”) to one on one for a year or six months, classes, fast start, time management. “It’s about marketing without breaking the bank.

Mr. Scott Gilbert of Allstate was the feature speaker Wednesday, and presented a somewhat different format, stressing what is most important to him in his life:

Team, Persistence, Delayed gratification, Organization, Continuous Self improvement, Leadership (Vision), Significance, Service and Legacy.

“The 5 Most Influential Books in my Life: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People – Stephen Covey (sphere of control/live on purpose guided by principles), The Four Agreements – Don Miguel Ruiz (domestication is agreeing to accept cultural filters in our psyche without questioning their relevance), There’s a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem – Wayne Dyer (the infinite potential available to all is hindered only by mental mistakes), The Seven Laws of Spiritual Success – Deepak Chopra (happiness is within/intention maters/release attachment), How to Be an Adult in Relationships – David Richo (Give the 5 A’s – Attention, Acceptance, Appreciation, Affection and Allowance to those in your life).

Scott also included some pivotal insights over the years: “Trust your intuition, What we say and think, especially to ourselves matters (acceptance of self and self love are key), Embracing the unknown (releasing attachment, especially to outcome), There is great excitement that comes with choosing your life on purpose, Happiness = Wanting what you have/Having what you want. Scott mentioned some personal achievements that included:Eagle Scout, Corporal in the Marine Corps Reserves, CSUF – BA Philosophy & Minor in Linguistics & Chemistry, Co-founding a youth football program and coaching youth and high school football. He Met Rue in 1991, married in 1993, and has two boys 21 and 14.

Mr. Scott Gilbert of Allstate Financial was the featured presenter at Wednesday’s meeting. Scott talked about why we invest, how we are told to invest by the industry, explained growth vs. income investment strategies and discussed the challenges faced by consumers in retirement. He explained how the goal is to create a plan to have a lifetime income stream that accounts for inflation. He stressed that the reason for taking on risk in investing is to combat the shrinking effect inflation has on the purchase power of our future income dollars. Besides inflation, he touched on some statistics about longevity and how the fact that Americans are living longer increases the risk of running out of money in their retirement years. By educating his customers about the potential risks they face in retirement, he can better help them meet their goals and dreams and ultimately providing peace of mind in retirement.

Ms. Ahna Bridenbaugh, L.Ac., master of acupuncture and Chinese Medicine was the featured speaker on Wednesday. Ahna delivered a moving tribute to her philanthropist physician grandfather, who invested his money in a non-profit medical clinic in Billings, Montana (The Billings Clinic). That clinic has multiplied and successfully spread to three different states. Her uncle Bob is also an MD. But neither her father nor her uncle has the remarkable bedside manner of her grandfather. Her other uncles are also doctors (“all the men in the family are doctors). In a traditional German household, however, the women were not expected or encouraged to pursue professional work. Ahna started out as a dancer, was a nutritionist, but at her 20th high school reunion, she decided to become a doctor, but quickly decided that alternative medicine would be her path–acupuncture and Chinese medicine.

Ms. Ahna Bridenbaugh, L.Ac. a Chinese Medicine acupuncturist, was the featured presenter at Wednesday’s meeting. After a few powerful words about the 4000 year history of acupuncture that was only first licensed in the United States in 1976, Ahna noted that Western medicine is just now starting to recognize this ancient model of healing because of decades of possitive patient results and expensive nucleur x-rays that clearly prove this effective and powerful mode of treatment. Ahna was excited to introcued us to a new machine called an “Acugraph,” which shows the movement in your meridians in real time and is the new model for ”acupuncture evidence-based medicine.” This machine indicates deficiencies or excesses or balance in the various meridians/organs in the body, and gives a clear picture of where the challenges are in the snapshot in time. It takes about 5-10 minutes to do a whole body reading in her office to determine your state of health. She explained acupuncture is like electro-magnetic rivers of energy traveling in your body. When this energy gets blocked, disease can happen. She showed us some cases: the machine indicated a severely weakened gall bladder meridian in a patient whose gall bladder had been removed. Another example showed weakness in the large intestitine for a woman complaining of constipation. Ahna still takes the patient’s pulses for diagnosis, and the Acugraph is the “evidence-based” backup to that diagnosis that visually (and scientifically) demonstrates to the patient what the issue is and what the treatment should be. Dr. Robert Bays of Conscious Consulting was the featured speaker at Wednesday’s meeting. He grew up in Germany, and was the first American to attend a German school after WWII. Later, he graduated from high school in Ohio at age 14, was almost drafted to play professional baseball, but his parents stopped it, because he was only 15. He got his Ph.D. Was the U of Minnesota at 25, was a university professor for ten years, left to become a professional actor (he was in Tennessee Williams last play on Broadway), became Head Trainer or Tony Robbins, is a practicing psychotherapist and international speaker on five continents, and has lived blissfully in Sedona with his wife Teri (Director of Music and Liturgy at St. John Vianney Church) for the last nine years. Dr. Robert Bays of Conscious Consulting was the featured presenter at Wednesday’s meeting. His background in NLP, Ericksonian Hypnosis, and the Enneagram serves him in the purpose of “helping our planet wake up from the dream of separation, and discover Awareness Itself is always here NOW–the Essence that animates all consciousness.” What that means to him as a psychotherapist, is to discover the archetypal “story” (“there are really only 3 of them”) that runs a person’s ego (and that we are identified with), and discover how to identify with the true Essence instead. That frees us from the delusions that cause the suffering in ourselves and in the world. Whether it’s problems in relationships, work-related stress, health–all of these issues cover up limiting beliefs that our ego identifies with. Ms. Sandy Barrett of Red Rock Taxes, LLC. was the featured speaker at the Wednesday meeting. She described herself as an Air Force brat, born in Texas, lived in Indiana, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Washington, Alaska, West Virginia, Arizona and Japan. She said she was a clumsy child, and her mother thought that dance lessons would “cure” the problem, but it was only gymnastics which she loved and worked for her issue, but when she moved again, there were no gymnastics. She did play serious softball on a team in Japan, was a majorette in high school in West Virginia. The featured speaker was Mr. Larry Phillips of SUPERTREE Services, LLC.. He was born in London, “an Air Force brat.” He was back in the US at 2, his first father passed away with lung cancer when he was 6. His mother remarried another Air Force man, and has been married over 50 years. He has two older brothers and sisters. He was in Hawaii in the 1960s, and was “really wild at a really wild time in Hawaii, just 7 years after statehood.” He was sent to military school in 1968, graduated in 1972, transferred to NAU, met his wife in 1975, and has been married 36 years. He was in the Army for 14 years with the 82nd Airborne, jumped out of planes, went to Hawaii again, ran in the 1981 Honolulu marathon, lived in Texas and Alaska. He came back to Arizona in 1992, has one daughter who is now 33, was a full-time firefighter, worked at the Snowbowl in the winter, and started his tree business in 1996. Dr. Tom Fernandes, DDS, of Sedona Dental Arts was the featured presenter at Wednesday’s meeting.

Dr. Tom spoke warmly of the Sedona Dental Arts’ on-the-spot conferences about patient care to make sure there is input and “3 minds in agreement between all three dentists in the office.”

The office uses the latest in dental equipment–laser for gum surgery, which is a-traumatic. They have a Cerec machine, which makes in-house crowns from start to finish. Dr. Tom spoke about his passionate interest in the medical aspects of dentistry; pharmacology is often on his mind, along with preventative dentistry.

Dental implants have become his specialty.

It is a family dental business in the truest sense: Dr. David Bill, dentist for 23 years, Dr. Tamara Bill Fernandez, daughter, and Dr. Tom Fernandes, son-in-law. Ms. Laurie Wilson of Verde Valley Tile was the featured speaker at the meeting.

She was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and moved to Arizona when she was 21. She used to teach accounting and computers.

Now, she and her husband have 50 years of experience between them working with tile. She has a son, 26, two granddaughters and three stepchildren: one in Seattle, 2 in Phoenix.

She has been collecting post cards since she was a little girl, and she shared some of them with us–especially cards from Egypt from a recent trip by her stepdaughter. You can reach Verde Valley Tile at (928) 634-3484.
